Light in a Blink: Harnessing Few-Cycle Pulses for Extreme Photonics

Few-cycle laser pulses unlock unprecedented control over light-matter interactions. This talk explores the generation of ultrashort, intense light bursts and their transformative impact on attosecond science, strong-field physics, and next-generation photonic technologies.

About the Speaker

Prof. Dr. Jens Biegert received his Ph.D. with distinction from TU Munich and the University of New Mexico in 2001, followed by research leadership at ETH Zürich. Since 2007, he has been at ICFO, pioneering mid-infrared photonics, attosecond soft X-ray science and laser-induced electron diffraction, enabling landmark insights into molecular and material dynamics. He is a Fellow of Optica, the American Physical Society and the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. His honors include the OSA Allen Prize, the Bessel Prize of the Humboldt Foundation and an ERC Advanced Grant. He has distinguished roles as Editor of Optica and Ultrafast Science, Adjunct Professor at the University of New Mexico, and Guest Professor at the Fritz Haber Institute. He served as Executive Director of Laserlab-Europe and on key governance bodies of Optica, including its Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Council. He also shaped Europe's analytical infrastructure through leadership in multiple EU-wide networks.
