WASHINGTON —Optica Publishing Group is pleased to announce that Judith M. Dawes has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Optics Continuum. Prof. Dawes will begin her tenure on 1 March 2024.
Dawes is a Professor of Physics at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Her research interests include laser physics, nanophotonics, and laser applications in medicine and communications. Her research achievements include the crystal growth, optical characterization, and laser operation of a new laser crystal, Yb:YAB, which emits tunable, self-frequency-doubled, infrared and green light; and the invention of a laser-cured protein solder for laser microsurgery to repair severed nerves and blood vessels.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dawes has served extensively as a volunteer supporting the optics and photonics community. She is a Fellow of Optica, SPIE and the Royal Society of NSW. She is currently an elected Director-at-Large of Optica’s Board of Directors. As former President and Council member of the Australian Optical Society (AOS, now the Australian & New Zealand Optical Society), she lobbied on national issues relating to the field. She also supported the local optics community as Editor of the AOS member newsletter, and she organized a national lecture series for the Laserfest celebration. Her editorial experience includes serving as an associate editor for Optica. In addition, Dawes has been active on numerous conference program committees, including Frontiers in Optics, CLEO PacRim, CLEO, Australian Optical Society conferences, Microwave Photonics Conference, and International Conference on Photonics, Optics and Laser Technology.
Dawes takes over the editor-in-chief position from Prof. Takashige Omatsu, who led the Journal as the Founding Editor since 2018. When asked about her new role, Dawes stated: “Optics Continuum has been established as a quality journal with notable innovations such as the option to transparently publish peer review correspondence alongside the final article. The opportunity to serve as editor-in-chief for a young journal and to influence its future growth is an exciting one. I am honored to have been selected for this position.”
“We are very grateful to the Journal’s inaugural editor-in-chief, Prof. Omatsu. His strong leadership, vision and dedication to launching and growing the Journal over the last six years has been inspiring,” said Elizabeth Nolan, deputy executive director and chief publishing officer, Optica Publishing Group. “While we will certainly miss him, we are excited to welcome our new editor-in-chief, Prof. Dawes. She also embraces the mission of Optics Continuum, and I am confident that her wealth of experience in optics and photonics and knowledge of scientific publishing will ensure the Journal’s continued success.”
