Researcher honored for pioneering use of optics and photonics to understand human sight, improve eye diagnostics and correction
WASHINGTON—The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to name Pablo Artal, Universidad de Murcia, Spain the 2019 Edgar D. Tillyer Award winner. Artal is honored for the pioneering use of optics and photonics technologies to unravel the human visual system and improve eye diagnostics and correction.
Artal
“Dr. Artal’s contribution to the study of human eyesight is terrifically important,” said 2019 OSA President Ursula Gibson. “His fundamental research on human vision, which has also led to clinical innovations, is absolutely deserving of Tillyer Award recognition.”
Artal studied physics at the University of Zaragoza, Spain, and received his Ph.D. at the CSIC-Instituto de Optica, Spain. He was a post-doctoral research fellow at Cambridge University in the U.K., and the Institut d'Optique in France. In 1994, he became full Professor of Optics at Universidad de Murcia, where he founded his “Laboratorio de Optica.” Artal spent sabbaticals in Rochester, N.Y., U.S.A., and in Sydney, Australia. He is currently a distinguished visiting professor at the Central South University in Changsha, China.
His research interests are the optics of the eye and the retina and the development of imaging techniques to be applied in vision, ophthalmology and biomedicine. He has pioneered highly innovative and significant advances in the methods for studying the optics of the eye and has contributed substantially to our understanding of the factors that limit human visual resolution. In addition, several of his results and ideas have been introduced in instruments and devices currently in clinical use.
Established in 1953, the Edgar D. Tillyer Award is presented to an individual who has performed distinguished work in the field of vision, including but not limited to the optics, physiology, anatomy or psychology of the visual system. The award is endowed by the American Optical Company.
