OSA Partners with Leading Chinese Institute to Launch New Joint Journal, Photonics Research
WASHINGTON, June 11, 2013—The Optical Society (OSA) today announced the launch and publication of the first issue of its newest peer-reviewed, open-access journal, Photonics Research. The journal is being published in partnership with the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) and Chinese Laser Press (CLP).
Photonics Research joins OSA’s diverse portfolio of 16 peer-reviewed journals and serves as a new international platform for researchers to share advances in optics and photonics. The editorial board, comprised of leading researchers from around the world, is led by Editor-in-Chief Zhiping (James) Zhou of Peking University in China.
“As international research collaborations become more prevalent, Photonics Research provides a platform for scientists from around the world to gain exposure in a high-quality journal,” said Zhou. “The scope of topics represents virtually the entire field of optics and photonics—from fundamental properties of light and its interactions with matter; to the latest developments in optoelectronic devices; to the emerging physics and applications involving quantum information, nanophotonics, ultrafast phenomena, and more.”
Photonics Research is freely and widely available to all readers via OSA’s digital library Optics InfoBase, and CLP’s Opticsjournal.net platform. The new journal will provide authors of accepted papers with professional composition and rapid article-at-a-time publication as well as an enhanced HTML formatted version and article-level metrics on Optics InfoBase. Topics include, but are not limited to, lasers, LEDs and other light sources; fiber optics and optical communications; imaging, detectors and sensors; novel materials and engineered structures; optical data storage and displays; plasmonics; quantum optics; diffractive optics and guided optics; medical optics and biophotonics; ultraviolet and x-rays; and terahertz technology.
The following papers are some of the research highlights from the first issue of Photonics Research, which can be accessed online at Optics InfoBase:
- Jia, et al., “Concept to devices: from plasmonic lighttrapping to up-scaled plasmonic solar modules.” Collaborators in Australia and China present strategies to overcome challenges for plasmonic enhancement of a large-scale silicon-solar cell.
- Miller, “Self-configuring universal linear optical component.” David Miller of Stanford University discusses how to design an optical device to perform arbitrary linear functions or coupling, while also providing self-configuration. The design approach requires no global optimization.
- Li, et al., “Microscopic and macroscopic manipulation of gold nanorod and its hybrid nanostructures.” Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences review recent studies on the optical properties of gold nanorods, methods of optical non-invasive manipulations, and a simple orientation method to improve performance.

Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was established in 1964. It is the earliest and the largest institute specializing in laser science and technology in China.
