About the Speaker

In his role as executive vice president and chief technology officer at Seagate, Dr. John Morris oversees research and product development for the company’s innovation initiatives. Through his leadership, expertise and focus on building a clear and focused innovation roadmap, Morris ensures that Seagate develops the most advanced nanoscale recording technology at scale. 

During his career at Seagate, he has contributed to many core technologies and innovations to position the company as a global mass-capacity data storage leader. Under his leadership, the company was first to scale hard drives using heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, a pivotal development in helping hyperscalers, cloud service providers and enterprises meet the surging demand for data storage.    

Since joining the company in 1996, he has held a variety of engineering leadership positions. Prior to his current role, he was vice president for Seagate’s hard drive and solid-state product lines. Before that, he served as vice president of design engineering for the enterprise development group.  

Morris holds 32 patents, primarily related to hard drive technologies. He earned a doctorate and master's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
