Optica Publishing Group Confirms Subscribe to Open Implementation for JOSA B
WASHINGTON—Optica Publishing Group today announced that its inaugural Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot for the Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B) has been successful. All content published in the 2026 volume of JOSA B will be made open access in perpetuity and freely available to readers worldwide—without article processing charges (APCs) for authors.
This decision comes after receiving sufficient subscription renewals and commitments from institutional libraries to meet the S2O participation threshold. The successful implementation of S2O for JOSA B reflects the strong engagement of the library community and demonstrates a sustainable, community-driven pathway to open access that benefits authors, libraries, and readers.
“I see Subscribe to Open as an example of collective goodwill that serves the entire community,” said Dr. Irina Novikova, Editor-in-Chief of JOSA B. “In particular, authors benefit from increased visibility for their work without APCs while continuing to receive the high-quality editorial oversight for which JOSA B is known.”
“We are pleased with the success of our S2O pilot for JOSA B and we thank our institutional subscribers for their continued support of the Journal,” said Alison Taylor, Chief Publishing Officer, Optica Publishing Group. “As a publisher, we value serving the optics and photonics community with a variety of publishing options and models.”
S2O offers libraries a cost-neutral way to support open access by renewing their subscriptions through existing processes. When a sufficient number of subscriptions is achieved, the participating journal(s) opens content published during the given volume year and those published papers remain freely accessible in perpetuity. Authors enjoy open access regardless of funding availability, expanding the dissemination and impact of their research.
By implementing S2O for JOSA B, Optica Publishing Group continues its exploration of sustainable approaches to open access that balance the needs of authors, libraries, and the broader scientific community. Optica Publishing Group joins Annual Reviews, The Royal Society, SAGE, and BioOne, among others, who have also implemented S2O.
