About the Speaker

Milvia Alata is a Peruvian postdoctoral researcher working in the development of multiphoton imaging techniques at KU Leuven, Belgium. Dr. Alata earned her bachelor’s degree in exact sciences (physics and mathematics) from the University of Tarapaca in Arica, Chile. During her master studies at the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica, in Mexico, she worked on the development of a mounting medium for high resolution optical microscopy. She also obtained her PhD at the same institution, working in an interdisciplinary project, studying the murine brain using label free imaging approaches like MRI and second harmonic generation microscopy (SHG). At KU Leuven she applies multiphoton imaging techniques, mostly third harmonic imaging, for the understanding of demyelination during neurodegeneration and for the study of the enteric nervous system.

Milvia joined Optica chapters during her PhD studies in Mexico where she assumed leading roles organizing inclusive science activities. Her volunteering focuses on bringing science closer to Latin American communities, especially developing learning activities for children and young students. Milvia’s volunteering includes other organizations like SPIE and IEEE, she has been an outreach ambassador (IEEE) since 2022.
