About the Speaker
Antigone Marino is researcher at the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems (ISASI) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). She earned her master’s degree in physics in 2000, and a PhD in 2004, both at the Physics Department of Federico II University of Naples, in Italy.
Her research has primarily focused on soft matter optics applied to telecommunication, with a particular interest in liquid crystals technologies. In recent years, her work has expanded to structured light and quantum technologies.
Nowadays she is President of the IEEE Photonics Society Italy Chapter, member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Physical Society (SIF) and member of the Board of Directors of the OPTICA Foundation.
She is chief editor of Euro Physics Journal Techniques and Instrumentation (EPJ-TI), chief editor of EuroPhysics News (EPN) and editor of Optics and Photonics News (OPN).
She received several awards and recognitions. In 2015 she won the OSA 2015 Outstanding Young Professionals Award of the Optical Society. In 2016 she has been awarded OPTICA Ambassador. In 2017 she won the European Physical Society “Achievement Award”.
Leveraging her expertise in science and professional development, she has designed a specialized course for Ph.D. students, covering topics such as soft skills, scientific communication, social media engagement, outreach, and other non-technical aspects essential to careers in scientific research.
Gabrielle Thomas is the Group Leader for Marketing at Menlo Systems GmbH, based in Germany. She was awarded a PhD in Laser Physics and Nonlinear Optics from Imperial College London in 2012, and since then she has worked in both academia and industry. She joined Menlo Systems in February 2022, and helps to support the company’s mission to deliver state-of-the-art photonics instrumentation to customers and partners globally.
Thomas has served as the sub-committee chair for CLEO S&I2, and is General Chair of the Laser Applications Conference, part of the Optica Laser Congress, for 2025. She chairs the Optica Membership, Engagement, and Development Council, and sits on the Optica Board of Directors. She is one of the 2019 Optica Ambassadors, and was selected as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Scientists in 2016.
