Femtosecond Laser Inscription of Fiber Bragg Gratings
Femtosecond laser inscription has emerged as a powerful technique for fabricating fiber Bragg gratings in optical fibers, offering unique advantages over traditional methods. This talk will explore the principles and capabilities of the point-by-point inscription method, highlighting its flexibility in tailoring advanced grating structures and its compatibility with various fiber types and materials. These gratings are enabling technologies in a wide range of applications, including optical communications, fiber lasers, sensing, harsh-environment monitoring, and emerging fields such as astrophotonics.
About the Speaker
Prof. Dr. Ir. Tigran Baghdasaryan was born in Yerevan, Armenia, on 17 October 1986. He obtained his bachelor's degree in physics from Yerevan State University in 2007. He earned his PhD in Engineering Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium, in 2015. From 2016 to 2022, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), and in 2022, he was appointed Research Professor at VUB, where he is affiliated with the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) research group. He has extensive expertise in design, modelling, fabrication, characterization, and prototyping of advanced optical fiber sensors. His research further focuses on femtosecond laser micromachining of gratings and resonant components in standard and specialty fibers, such as photonic crystal fibers and multicore fibers. He also works on integrated waveguide and interconnection components fabricated via direct laser writing in polymers. Recently, he developed and demonstrated an unprecedented ultracompact 3D-printed splitter for multicore fibers, featuring a remarkably short length and low insertion loss. He has authored or co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 40 conference contributions. He is a Senior Member of Optica.
