Tunable On-chip Lasers

The talk introduces the key active elements used in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), focusing on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and laser sources achieved on generic InP platform. The participants will learn the underlying physical principles, practical applications in PIC design, and how to effectively design these components using advanced simulation tools.

About the Speaker

Stefano Tondini was born in Trento, Italy, in 1987. He received the B.S. degree in physics and the M.S. degree in experimental physics from the University of Trento, Trento (IT), in 2010 and 2013, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in physics and nanoscience from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena (IT) in 2017.

His current research interests include: integrated photonics, software-defined networking, IoT communication protocols, context-aware information systems, ML-based optimization methods, environmental/pollution sensing. Dr. Tondini is IAOA, IEEE and SPIE member. AICA and Rotary International have awarded him for the best Ph.D. thesis on Computer Ethics in 2017. He received a top-scored oral presentation at the OFC 2018 in San Diego (US). In 2022, he won a MSCA fellowship at the University of Eindhoven with the project titled PHUSION (InP photonic integrated circuit for multi-species gas spectroscopy featuring self-calibration). He is currently with the integrated tunable laser team of the Photonic Integration group at the Electrical Engineering dept. of the University of Eindhoven.
