Third Order Nonlinear Optics
Third Order Nonlinear Optics:
All media exhibit a cubic nonlinear effect, although for some media it can be very weak. I will give the basic elements of these nonlinear optical effects and will then discuss its key manifestations.
Solitons:
Optical solitons are a key consequence of cubic nonlinear optical effects. I will discuss how solitons can exist, how they can be generated in the lab, as well as their properties.
About the Speaker
Martijn de Sterke has a degree in applied physics from the University of Delft in the Netherlands and a PhD from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester in the US. After postdoctoral work at the University of Toronto, he joined the University of Sydney, where he is now a Professor in Physics. He was the Optics Express Editor-in-Chief from 2007 to 2012, is an Optica Fellow, and won Optica’s Esther Hofman Beller prize in 2017. He is an author of more than 300 refereed journal papers. His research interests include nonlinear optics, fiber optics, light sails, and electromagnetic cooling.
