Yawei Yin

Microsoft, Sr. Principal Newtork Developer - Azure Fiber & AI

About the Speaker

Dr. Yawei Yin is a Principal Network Developer at Microsoft Azure, where he leads the optical engineering team charged with designing, deploying, and operating the global fiber optical network infrastructure for Azure and for AI. Since joining Microsoft in 2019, he has led a team of engineers taking full responsibility for the optical network that underpins one of the world's largest cloud and AI platforms.

At Microsoft, Dr. Yin has spearheaded several high-impact initiatives at the intersection of optical technology and AI infrastructure. He led the onboarding of 800G DR/FR/LR PAM4 optical transceivers for AI data centers and has been a driving force in advancing Retimed Transmitter Linear Receiver (RTLR, aka half retimed) Optics, Linear-drive Pluggable Optics (LPO), and Near/Co-Packaged Optics (NPO/CPO) technologies, actively participating in OIF standardization efforts. He designed the next-generation optical open line systems (OLS 2.0 and OLS 3.0), significantly simplifying terrestrial long-haul deployments and reducing deployment time. He also led the industry-first onboarding and standardization of 400G ZR interoperable coherent optical pluggable modules, and pioneered the design and testing of Hollow Core Fiber (HCF) optimized optical line systems including high-power amplifiers and OTDRs. His contributions extend to the evaluation of Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) systems and hands-on development of fleet-wide software automation workflows.

Before Microsoft, Dr. Yin held engineering and research roles at Alibaba Group, NEC Laboratories America, and UC Davis. He is an inventor on over 20 published patents assigned to Microsoft and NEC and a (co)author of 80+ peer‑reviewed publications.
