About the Speaker
Dr. Laurent Schares is currently in the AI infrastructure organization at IBM Research, where he is the network performance lead for Cloud and Sovereign AI systems. He has over 25 years of experience across optical interconnects, switching, system integration, networking and scheduling. He has received multiple IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement and other IBM awards. He has over 150 publications, patents and presentations. He was involved with the Optical Fiber Communications and Networking Conference (OFC) in various roles between 2011 and 2024, for which he served as Program, General, and Steering Committee Chair. He was on the editorial board of the Optica/IEEE Journal of Optical Communications and Networking (JOCN) between 2018-2024, and he currently serves on the IEEE Photonics Society Board of Governors. Dr. Schares holds M.S. and PhD degrees in physics from ETH Zurich, Switzerland.
