About the Speaker

Dr. Merritt led NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s electro-optics (EO)  team to the successful launch and commissioning of the Laser Communication Relay Demonstration (LCRD) geostationary satellite. He provided technical engineering and resource management expertise to ensure the timely and high-quality build, test, delivery, and integration of both space flight and ground modems. He led the development and deployment of unique, extremely high performance, high-power optical amplifiers (HPOAs) for uplinks from the Optical Communications Test Laboratory (OCTL) located on Table Mountain, in California.

He then served as the lead of the Laser System Reliability team. In that role, he developed and implemented reliability tests and led related discussions with LISA project management, the project's industrial partners, and systems engineering teams at the European Space Agency (ESA).

He has received numerous awards including the Agency Honor Award for Exceptional Engineering Achievement in 2017, the Robert H. Goddard Exceptional Achievement for Engineering award in 2018 and the Robert H. Goddard Exceptional Achievement in Mentoring award in 2020.

Prior to joining NASA and for most of his career, Dr. Merritt worked in industry with companies including: JDSU, Thorlabs, Teledyne, and The Analytic Sciences Corporation (TASC).
