About the Speaker
Dr. Maxim Karpov is a Co-CEO and co-founder of Enlightra, a deeptech startup developing next-generation photonic hardware for extreme-performance data communication and AI computing systems. Dr. Karpov received his BSc (2012) and MSc (2014) with honors in Applied Physics and Mathematics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). In 2015, Maxim received the Marie Curie ITN PhD Fellowship and started to work on his Doctorate at the Swiss Federal University of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), where he delved into the field of optical microcombs, significantly advancing the understanding of their nonlinear dynamics and demonstrating applications of this technology in optical communications, LiDAR, and other fields. His Doctoral Thesis received multiple awards at the national (Swiss) and international levels, including the EPFL’s Best Thesis in Physics 2020 distinction Prize and the MDPI Physics: Best PhD Thesis award 2021. Furthermore, Dr. Karpov’s Thesis has been recognized with the prestigious Hans-Eggenberger Thesis Prize 2020, and he received the QEOD 2021 Thesis Prize for applied aspects, awarded bi-annually by the European Physical Society. In 2021, Dr. Karpov won an SNF BRIDGE – Proof of Concept funding and joined the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) to continue the maturation of optical microcombs. The same year, Maxim was recognized as one of ten Rising Stars of Light 2021 by Nature Portfolio and founded Enlightra. Dr. Karpov has co-authored more than 35 papers in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Science, Nature Photonics, and Nature Physics.
