Challenges and opportunities in testing of integrated photonics

In this presentation the development of hybrid lasers is presented, from the early devices to the required technology for future devices.  Here we will focus on one of the most simple hybrid PIC devices consisting of only 2 material platforms: a Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a micro-ring based wavelength selective mirror in Silicon Nitride. The resulting device harvests best of both worlds, here:

1- The SOA gives a high optical output power, due to the high optical gain.

And

2- The Silicon Nitride PIC, giving the laser an ultranarrow linewidth thanks to the Low loss characteristics, and the unique characteristics explained.

The performance of typical devices is presented. And key developments in assembly techniques that will pave the way for future hybrid devices.

About the Speaker

Dimitri Geskus is born in the Netherlands in 1979. 

He developed a fascination for applications in the high tech work field during his internships at the NFRA in the Netherlands, CERN in Switzerland and FZJ in Germany for his first study applied physics (B. Eng.). Driven by this interest in technology, he started his Master of Science in physics with specialization in laser physics and graduated in 2006. During his PhD at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, he developed high power rare earth doped channel waveguide lasers.

In 2010 Dimitri joined XiO Photonics in the Netherlands with the main activity to develop modules based on photonic devices. And in 2013 he receives a Brazilian research grant in the program for talented young scientists. This grant enabled him to develop lasers emitting blue light based on stimulated Raman scattering in São Paulo, Brazil.

In 2015, Dimitri started as researcher at the KTH in Stockholm in Sweden, where he fulfilled a key role in setting up a new research group to develop ultranarrow linewidth lasers for sensor applications. After the birth of his child he re-joined the team of XiO Photonics 2016 to get involved in the development of external cavity lasers using SiN feedback circuitry. XiO Photonics was acquired by LioniX International in 2017. Since 2021, Dimitri fulfills the role of CTO at Chilas BV.

Dimitri is (co)author of more than 30 journal publications, 100 conference publication and two patents, all in the field of lasers and integrated optics.
