Optics Letters to Begin Accepting Four-Page Articles Starting 1 MayAs a result of feedback from the optics and photonics community, OSA is pleased to announce that Optics Letters will now accept four-page articles. This additional page will allow authors to include a more extensive reference list to put their work into better context, draw links to other related work, and expand on their experimental and theoretical approaches.Papers that were submitted prior to 1 May 2013 must still adhere to the 3-page limit. CIOMP/OSA Summer School Student Travel Grants AvailableCIOMP will support a limited number of travel grants for the use of students attending the summer session from outside of China. Students must submit an application for acceptance and indicate in a separate letter their need for travel funds. Funds will be limited to cover only airfare from the student's home city to Changchun and back not to exceed USD $2,000. Students will still be required to pay the USA $450 registration fee which includes accommodations, meals and registration materials.The 2013 CIOMP-OSA Summer Session on Optical Engineering, Design and Manufacturing will be held 4-9 August in Changchun, China. The week-long program will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to further their education and interact with instructors, local professors and fellow students. Participants will also be able to present their own research to the participants. The application deadline is 3 May 2013. Space is limited so apply today! [top] |
April’s OSA Member in the News: Jie QiaoOSA member Jie Qiao met with U.S. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter of NY as part of the OSA co-sponsored Congressional Visits Day last month to discuss the importance of sustained federal funding for research and development (R&D). Qiao was then featured on Rep. Slaughter’s official blog as part of an article about the importance of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields during Women’s History Month. Qiao is a scientist at University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), the principal experiment facility for research into nuclear fusion in the U.S., where she works developing technology for LLE's two powerful fusion lasers. Qaio founded WiSTEE (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship) at the University of Rochester, which provides mentorship opportunities to women interested in STEM fields.To read about more OSA members in the news visit OSA’s website. Apply for Global Meeting SupportThe OSA International Council has allocated funds for investing in the global optics community by supporting international meetings. OSA will consider requests for cooperation with or co-sponsorship of meetings and review requests for financial sponsorship. To be eligible for financial support, the meeting must be held in a developing country and approved by the OSA Board of Meetings. OSA Foundation Announces Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition WinnerThe OSA Foundation and Corning Incorporated recently named Robert Palmer of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany the 2013 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition winner. Palmer was awarded top honors for his paper, titled “Silicon-Organic Hybrid (SOH) Modulator Generating up to 84 Gbit/s BPSK and M-ASK Signals.” The $1,500 grand prize and two $1,000 honorable mentions were presented at the Plenary and Awards Session at OFC/NFOEC. Palmer was one of six finalists selected from more than 400 student paper submissions.This year’s honorable mentions are:

Herbert Walther Award Nominations Due by 30 August 2013The Herbert Walther Award honors Professor Herbert Walther for the seminal influence of his ground-breaking innovations in quantum optics and atomic physics, and for his wide-ranging contributions to the international scientific community. The Award recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community.The Award is jointly made by Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) and the Optical Society, and presented by each society in alternate years.
