Optica Photonics and Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Industry Summit

23 May 2023, 8:00 AM — 24 May 2023, 5:00 PM

The nature of photonics technologies in the manufacturing industry has changed significantly over time. Historically, the size of these technologies was one of the most critical features. Researchers focused their efforts on miniaturization with more affordable costs of optical, photonics, and electronics technologies. Now, manufacturing firms have shifted to improving both the size and response times of photonics technologies. Scientists are developing smaller and faster devices, such as integrated submicron devices, to enter the space, biotechnology, and LiDAR markets - possible applications include optical datacom, MEMS, microfluidics, biosensors, astronomy, and surface sciences. Innovators have used this same sensor technology to improve self-driving vehicles' 3D capabilities and response time. The Summit aims to bring together the entire community, from manufacturing companies and their supply chain partners to end users, focusing on addressing their challenges in photonics, automotive, and consumer electronics areas. Topics of discussion include nanoimprint lithography, maskless lithography technology, metaoptics, AR waveguides, and wafer-level optics. This Summit is hosted at EVG’s headquarters in St. Florian am Inn, Austria. Together we can solve these challenges and optimize supply chain collaboration!

Applications of Lasers for Sensing and Free Space Communications (LS&C)

8 October 2023, 12:00 AM — 12 October 2023, 11:59 PM

LS&C presents the latest developments in laser-based sensing and free space laser communication. Sophisticated laser systems are increasingly being used in a wide variety of applications including remote imaging and object characterization, sensing for autonomous vehicles, probing of the atmosphere and high bandwidth free space optical (FSO) communications. These applications spread across a variety of basing platforms including ground, air, water and space platforms. They also encompass a range of laser system implementations. Direct detection measurements can produce 3D point clouds and can incorporate sophisticated detector technologies such as Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes. Coherent detection systems can make time varying phase measurement and also provide estimates of the wave field that can be used in synthetic aperture imaging. Both types of systems can find application in probing of the earth and atmosphere as well as in free space optical communications. However, system requirements continue to demand increased performance from the system itself as well as the various components used to implement these systems. Advances in beam steering, waveform-agile laser and detector schemes, mitigation of atmospheric effects and development of image and signal processing for information extraction are all significant challenges. This meeting reports on the multiple applications of lasers in sensing and FSO communications, the sophisticated systems that operate in these applications and the enabling components and processing techniques.

Industry Tutorial: Automating the Design of PIC-based LiDAR Systems

On Demand

1 December 2022, 11:00 AM — 12:00 PM

Originally developed for military use in the 1960’s, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technologies are now being used for medical, agricultural, environmental, civil engineering, space exploration and automotive applications. The adoption of LiDAR for autonomous driving is likely to be the first widespread commercial use for LiDAR. Coherent LiDAR systems measure both the phase and amplitude of the return signal, allowing for the measurement of both the distance and velocity of an object simultaneously, making it an ideal candidate for autonomous driving applications. In gaining such widespread adoption, size, weight and cost of such systems must be significantly decreased. One way to achieve such benefits is to leverage the advantages of integrated photonics.
