Overview

In September 2020, industry experts and leading academics participated in the OSA Incubator on Visual Perception in AR/VR. The meeting focused on four key topics for AR/VR technology today: (1) optimal device hardware; (2) impacts of human perception; (3) challenges and limitations; (4) content and nontechnical issues. The topics covered by this incubator on emerging AR/VR technology were collated and published in a feature article in the April 2021 issue of OPN. 

As with any fruitful scientific discussion, the September 2020 virtual incubator resulted in more questions than answers, identifying the need to expand the talks beyond the previous topics and delve into the realm of immersive technologies (AR/VR/MR/XR) including other sensory modalities. Therefore, this second incubator will explore other important aspects of human perception and immersive technologies where the displays and optics are at the heart of it. 

This incubator's objective will be exploring metrology in AR/VR optics to achieve consensus on definitions and industry standards. Additional discussions will be on possibilities and challenges related to human visual perception and other sensory modalities (audio, haptics, taste and smell). Continuous collaboration between academia and industry is essential to take the ideas in this multidisciplinary area of optics beyond the discussions. Thus this incubator, through invited talks, panels, moderated discussion and informal networking sessions will enable interactive communication on five key topics:

  • Optical metrology for AR/VR displays,
  • Standardization of fundamental optical measures,
  • Interactions and interfaces (added sensory modalities),
  • Sensory-motor interaction and accessibility to the technology (physiological challenges),
  • Killer apps for wider adoption.
