In Memoriam: Hiroshi Nishihara, 1937 - 2021
31 December 2021
Hiroshi Nishihara, Optica Fellow and Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering at Osaka University, has passed away. Nishihara was most known for his research that involved holography, integrated optics, and optical-fiber sensor techniques.
Nishihara was born in Osaka, Japan, on 4 August 1937 and received his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in communication engineering from Osaka University. After completing higher education, he joined the university as a professor and remained there until 1984. During his tenure, he coauthored books such as Optical Wave Electronics (1989), which received the Book Award from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers ( IEICE), and Optical Integrated Circuits (1989), which is available in Japanese and English versions.
Nishihara received numerous awards in the US and Japan. IEICE awarded him the Paper Award in 1977, 1983, 1986, and 1994. The Laser Society of Japan recognized him with the Research Award in 1982 and the Paper Award in 1990. In 1988, he received the Sakurai Memorial Prize from the Optoelectronics Industry and Technology Development Association (OITDA) for his significant contributions to the development of industrial optoelectronics technology. In 2003, he was made an Optica (formerly OSA) Fellow for contributions to the development of optoelectronic devices, especially for micro-optics and integrated optics.
Nishihara was a member of IEICE of Japan, the Japan Society of Applied Physics, and the Laser Society of Japan.
Optica and the scientific community mourn his loss.
