In Memoriam: Concetto R. Giuliano , 1935 - 2019

Concetto Richard Giuliano, Optica Fellow and former senior scientist for Nonlinear Optics, Directed Energy Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirkland Air Force Base in New Mexico, passed away at age 84 on 3 November 2019 in Kula, Maui, Hawaii. Giuliano’s primary research focused on the field of nonlinear optics and lasers.
Giuliano was born in Massachusetts and raised in California. He received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Southern California in 1957. He then pursued a PhD in Chemical Physics from the California Institute of Technology. After completing higher education, he worked for Hughes Research Labs in Malibu, California, and by 1970, was promoted to senior staff physicist. In 1983, he headed their optical physics department and remained there until 1989. Giuliano also chaired the CLEO Science and Innovations Program Committee from 1982 until 1985. From 2002 through 2006, he chaired the CLEO Steering Committee.
In 1985, Giuliano was named a Fellow of Optica. He was also named a Fellow by the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE). In August of 1995, Giuliano began his Air Force civil service career and led a study to identify military applications of lasers in and through space at the Phillips Laboratory. In 1997, he became the Senior Scientist of the Directed Energy Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory.
Outside of optics, Giuliano enjoyed hiking and the outdoors. He also had a love for music and cooking. Giuliano is survived by his partner, Tina, his brother, Paul, and his children: Richard, Elaine, Diana, Lynne, and John.
