OSA Biophotonics Congress

Circuit optogenetics, deep-learning-enabled computational microscopy and sensing are featured topics

TUCSON, Ariz. – Progress in instrumentation development and its rapid application to biomedical studies permits imaging functionality not possible a few years ago. Plenary speakers at the 2019 OSA Biophotonics Congress: Optics in the Life Sciences, whose work exemplifies this dynamic era, will describe critical advances in the emerging fields of circuit optogenetics and deep-learning-enabled computational microscopy and sensing.

Emiliani

Plenary speaker Valentina Emiliani, Vision Institute, Paris, France, will discuss how recent progress in light delivering approaches, opsins engineering and laser source development have brought the field of optogenetics into a new phase named circuit optogenetics, where neural circuits can be optically interrogated with millisecond temporal precision and single-cell resolution. This new field is transforming neuroscience research with the promise of enabling neuroscientists to drive and read neural circuits and determine how they give rise to sensation, perception, and cognitive function.

Plenary speaker Aydogan Ozcan, California NanoSystems Institute at University of California, Los Angeles, U.S.A., will provide an overview of some of the institute’s recent work on the use of deep neural networks in advancing computational microscopy and sensing systems and discuss its use in biomedical applications. Deep learning holds numerous opportunities for revolutionizing image formation, reconstruction and sensing fields.

WHAT: OSA Biophotonics Congress: Optics in the Life Sciences Plenary Sessions
WHEN: Monday, 15 April 8:00 to 10:00 AM (MST)
WHERE: Tucson, Ariz., Lowes Ventana Canyon Resort

The OSA Biophotonics Congress: Optics in the Life Sciences, 14-17 April 2019, with more than 80 invited speakers, will highlight the latest advances in molecular probe development, life science imaging, novel and more-powerful optical instrumentation and its application to study fundamental biological processes and clinical investigations. In addition to the plenary sessions, the Congress is comprised of five technical sessions focusing on: Bio-Optics: Design and Application; Novel Techniques in Microscopy; Optical Manipulation and Its Applications; Optical Molecular Probes; Imaging and Drug Delivery and Optics and the Brain.

Cumulatively, this congress will bring together leaders in the field whose contributions are significantly advancing the state of the art in biological and medical research utilizing optical technologies.
