Sizing Up the Optics and Photonics Industry
The worldwide scope of optics and photonics has grown massively in recent years, having reached more than half a trillion U.S. dollars in annual value, according to Optica's estimates. And Tom Hausken, the society's senior industry adviser, points out that the "downstream value" of these technologies is far bigger than that.

"Three [light-driven] segments alone—microlithography, optical communications and displays—enable, in some way, nearly the entire global economic output of US$100 trillion," Hausken writes in a Market Report in the October 2021 Optics & Photonics News. In the story, Hausken looks at estimates for market size and growth from both Optica and the European photonics public-private partnership Photonics21—and talks about why such estimates matter.

By the way: Optica members can now access this story and other OPN content not only in the print issue and the magazine's website, but in a brand-new digital edition that brings a page-by-page, magazine-like experience direct to their laptops, smartphones or tablets. Try it out today!

  • What currently excites you most about working in the optics and photonics industry?
The seemingly endless innovation that exists in the photonics industry has always excited me—there are always opportunities to develop newer and better technology to improve people's lives. And because that drives so many of us in this industry, there are always great people to work with in finding and solving these new, exciting problems.
  • What career advice would you give to your younger self?
As long as you're working on something challenging, have patience that any failures are lessons that will only help in the future.
  • What is a hobby or passion of yours?
Studying and practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been a passion of mine for more than 10 years.
GEMM
Optica and AGU's joint Global Environmental Measurement and Monitoring (GEMM) Initiative will convene a hybrid Summit, "Cities are the Key to the Climate Solution: Meeting Global Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and Air Quality Targets Through Real-Time Measurement" on 3 November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland, alongside the United Nations 26th Climate Change Conference.

Cities account for 70% of all GHG emissions. The Summit will highlight the GEMM Urban Air Pilot Project's low-cost sensors and networks for real-time monitoring of CO2 and air pollutants at the neighborhood scale and information policymakers and other stakeholders need for climate change and air quality actions.

The GEMM Scottish Center at the University of Strathclyde is co-hosting the Summit with: Optica, American Geophysical Union (AGU), University of California, Berkeley, Glasgow City Council, UK Met Office and National Physical Laboratory.

Speakers include: Donna Strickland, 2018 Nobel Laureate in Physics and 2013 OSA President; Susan Aitken, Glasgow City Council Leader; David Miller, C40 Cities Director of International Diplomacy; Tom Baer, GEMM Initiative Chair and 2009 OSA President; Guy Brasseur, AGU and Max Planck Institute of Meteorology; Allister Ferguson, University of Strathclyde and many others.
