Optical Fiber’s Earthy Side
For more than 50 years, high-quality, low-loss optical fiber has been enabling vast expansion of worldwide communications and the global internet—progress that was celebrated and extended at this month's all-virtual 2021 OFC Conference and Exhibition. But fiber optics can drive improvements in human welfare in a wide variety of other areas, too.

For example, this month OSA’s Optics & Photonics News reports on how researchers are leveraging fiber to detect and monitor earthquakes, map previously unknown underground faults, and keep tabs on other natural hazards and on activity in “smart” cities. There’s even talk about pressing the worldwide supply of unused, or dark, installed optical fiber into service as an earthquake early-warning system.
