OSA Centennial Celebration
OSA celebrated its epic 100th Anniversary during FiO/Laser Science in Rochester, NY, USA last month. The week was filled with special festivities that included light jugglers, aerialists and a hip-hop violinist to name a few. On Wednesday night, OSA transformed Rochester’s Sibley Building into the Party of the Century for our 100 Year BASH. It was certainly a night to remember! During the OSA Centennial Board Dinner on Thursday night, at least 23 current and former OSA Officers met with several Nobel Laureates and Honorary Members to toast the end of our 100th Annual Meeting. The entire week was celebrated with so much energy and excitement!

Futurist Michio Kaku Headlines Light The Future Speaker Series at FiO 2016

In a once in a lifetime event, futurist and theoretical physicist, Michio Kaku, City College of New York, delivered a humorist and insightful presentation about the future. He talked about lasers in outer space that could analyze black holes; why the Big Bang took place at all; and lasers mapping the human brain to understand mental illness and more. Sir Peter Knight, 2004 OSA President, served as MC for the discussion. This program also featured a special Ignite the Future segment where predictions of what’s next in optics were given by Nobel Prize winners, including
Nicolaas Bloembergen, Robert F. Curl, Roy J. Glauber, John L. Hall, W.E. Moerner,
William D. Phillips and David J. Wineland. Watch the full presentation here

US Government Officials Applauded OSA’s History and the Optics Community
Senator Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y. have introduced resolutions in the United States Senate and House of Representatives commemorating The Optical Society’s centennial celebration. The resolutions reaffirm the crucial role that optics and photonics have played over the past 100 years and the influence they have on the U.S. economy and everyday lives. The resolutions also herald the importance of continued investment in fundamental optics and photonics research.

Steven Chu Speaks at the Light the Future Program at the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP)
 Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate, former U.S Secretary of Energy and OSA Fellow, gave a presentation at ACP on Thursday, 3 November as part of OSA's Light The Future speaker series.
Dr. Chu gave an engaging talk about energy, biomedicine and optics and photonics research that will have a profound effect on the global economy and our everyday lives.

 Join OSA as we celebrate our 100th anniversary with the Light The Future speaker series featuring distinguished scientists, engineers and Nobel Laureates.  The OSA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that 96 OSA Members have been elected as the newest class of OSA Fellows. OSA Fellows are a distinguished group of members who have served the Society and our community with distinction. They are elected based on several factors, including specific scientific, engineering, educational and technological contributions, technical or industry leadership as well as service to OSA and the global optics community. As a reflection of OSA’s global reach, 60 percent of newly elected Fellows reside outside the United States. Please join us in congratulating the 2017 Fellows.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Antigone Marino
 “In 2006, my chapter was able to host a guest speaker through OSA’s Traveling Lecturer Program. As a student this was really a great opportunity and it played a big role in my decision to join The Society. This September, ten years after joining OSA, I experienced the excitement of being a Traveling Lecturer myself.
I visited the Indian School of Mines, OSA Student Chapter in Dhanbad, India, for the IONS Dhanbad conference. This was also a nostalgic experience since I was one of the students who attended the very first IONS conference in 2007. I never thought that IONS would be hosted in five different continents and that I would be an invited speaker. To me, this proves that The Optical Society is a growing community and that I have grown as a professional as well. Another way to look at it is, OSA grows because it is able to grow its members! Thank you to OSA and the students at Dhanbad for making this such a memorable experience.”

Submit your paper for the 12th Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Pacific Rim (CLEO-PR), co-located with the 22nd OptoElectronics and Communications Conference (OECC) and the 5th Photonics Global Conference (PGC). Hosted by Nanyang Technological University, this will be the biggest photonics platform in Singapore for researchers, scientists, engineers and students from around the world to exchange ideas and the latest research results.

Unique Career Opportunity: OSA Congressional Science Policy Fellowship
Submission Deadline: 6 January 2017
Combine your interest in policy with your science background. Congressional Science Policy Fellows spend one year in Washington, DC, working as legislative assistants on the staff of a member of U.S. Congress or Congressional Committee. Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the start of the fellowship, 1 September 2017, to be eligible. Mid-and late-career applicants are also encouraged to apply. In addition to being a great opportunity for young professionals, it is also an ideal way to spend an academic sabbatical or leave of absence from a company.

The Final Rule on ITAR Category XII is Released
 On October 11, the Obama Administration released the final rule of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) for Category XII. Category XII encompasses fire control, laser, imaging, and guidance equipment that the United States considers critical to national security. The rule is part of the Administration's Export Control Reform effort. Category XII of the ITAR was the last category considered due to the complexity of the areas it covers. The reform effort was launched in 2009 to "build higher walls around fewer items," a departure from the previous rules to allow U.S. businesses to be more competitive. We urge companies to carefully review the rule to find out how it will impact your organization.

Laser Companies are Doing Better than Expected
Large laser manufacturers are doing better than the overall indicators would suggest. Something is going well for them, but what is it? OIDA reviewed this question and the laser and machine tools market for the Executive Forum of the OSA Laser Congress, on 3 November in Boston.
The figure shows four companies that strongly overlap with laser sales: IPG Photonics, II-VI, Trumpf, and Coherent. Their long term results are laudable, ranging from 4% to 20% compound annual growth for the periods shown, even considering the downturn of 2008-2009. Newport and Rofin showed slower growth through the period at 3% compounded annually, and became recent acquisition targets. MKS Instruments closed its acquisition of Newport in May 2016, and Coherent is currently in the process of acquiring Rofin. When the acquisition is complete, it will make Coherent the largest laser manufacturer in the world.

Plympton Recieves The RRPC Leadership Award
 The RRPC Leadership Award recipient for 2016 is Rick Plympton, CEO of Optimax Systems and OIDA Member, for working with fellow members and the community to promote the Rochester Region's Optics, Photonics and Imaging Industry. Plympton is recognized for his career work with the regional and national optics, photonics and imaging industries. In his position as a board member with the New York Photonics cluster Plympton has initiated strategies, helped fund initiatives and promoted New York's OPI industry for nearly two decades. Congratulations Rick!

New JOSA Collections Celebrate OSA’s Rich Legacy
What papers were presented at the first OSA meeting? The recently-updated Centennial Bookshelf includes anecdotes like this from OSA’s past in a new collection of JOSA material covering OSA meetings, conferences, and events. We also added a listing of all JOSA, JOSA A, and JOSA B papers published by OSA Presidents, new Editor’s Picks collections covering Vision, Quantum Optics, and Spectroscopy, and we revealed the final 25 most-cited JOSA, JOSA A, and JOSA B papers of all time.
