Journal of the Optical Society of America Celebrates OSA's Centennial

As the year-long celebration of the OSA centennial commences, OSA Publishing is excited to present content from the Society's first publication, Journal of the Optical Society of America (JOSA), as well as its spinoffs, JOSA A and JOSA B on the OSA centennial website.

On this commemorative website, we feature the Journal’s Editors-in-Chief and topical editors, editorials, and content from the journals over the last 99 years, as well as the 100 most-cited papers from JOSA, JOSA A and JOSA B. The new features will be added throughout the year, including a collection of influential articles that underscore the development of key topic areas over time. Additionally, JOSA A and JOSA B will publish feature articles from leaders who will provide their insight on these topics.

Visit the site regularly; or sign up for journal alerts for JOSA A and/or JOSA B to stay informed on all the latest news and content.

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Carlos López-Mariscal

"Being able to talk to such a diverse audience at the OSA Student Chapter of Universidad de Guanajuato was particularly motivating. Meeting with graduate and undergraduate students from several fields of science and engineering with a common interest in the Optical Sciences was invigorating and rewarding. It’s always a refreshing experience. Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of these lectures is the chance to share useful experiences with young and upcoming optic professionals on a personal basis. I strongly recommend joining the Traveling Lecturer program to my colleagues who have not yet done so, for this is one of the most engaged audiences I have had the opportunity to address."

OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA) 2016 List of "What's Hot and What's Not"

It's the start of a new year, time to bring out OIDA's unscientifically gathered list of what's hot, what's not and what's just "meh."

OIDA's Early Outlook for 2016

OIDA’s early estimate is that the global photonics market declined again in 2015 from the previous year, but the decline will be temporary. The market was bumpy for major sectors like displays and solar cells. It’s understandable that the market must tread water for a while, with economic challenges reaching China and continuing in Europe and Japan, and low oil prices hurting oil producing states.

US Optics and Photonics Clusters: Formal and Otherwise

OIDA recently characterized the US optics and photonics industry. We counted establishments with US locations and employment, regardless where the company’s headquarters or operations are. It amounts to about 3,300 companies and 385,000 jobs, including both components and the products that they enable. “Enabled” products include such things as cameras for machine vision, using the definition that OIDA has used for many years. Counting the downstream jobs would add far more firms and jobs.

Read more on how employment is distributed by state or economic "cluster."

OIDA's First Start-Up Series Event in Silicon Valley–A Resounding Success

OIDA is committed to fostering the development and commercialization of new optics and photonics technologies that will expand the industry's product pipeline. To accelerate productization we are bringing together start-up companies with top equity investors through our new Start-Up Series events.
