Santosh Kumar grew up in a small village and studied using only a kerosene lantern. His curiosity was strong from a young age, and one day it ran wild, and he touched the flickering flame of the lamp. Though he burned his hand, he walked away from the event still curious, but more likely to ask questions first. Another early scientific experiment took place at school. His class placed three chickpeas on a bamboo stick, one completely submerged in water, one completely above the water, and the third only partially immersed. The third was the only one to germinate. Santosh recalls, “I was amazed and kept wondering why only that seed had grown. Looking back, it was the starting point of my scientific journey, further nurtured by inspiring teachers who encouraged me to ask questions and explore research.”
As he progressed through school, Santosh was drawn to science and physics, eventually pursuing electronics engineering. As a student, he was heavily involved in professional societies such as Optica and established two Student Chapters at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, India, serving as president of each. In this role, he had the opportunity to attend Optica’s Student Leadership Conference, and this was a particularly influential experience for the young scientist. He shares, “Those interactions opened the door to international collaborations and broadened my perspective on research. At that time, I did not fully realize how influential these global connections would become, but they later played a pivotal role in shaping my academic career.”
Today, Santosh is a professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Additional Dean (R&D), and head of the Center of Excellence for Nanotechnology at Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation, Vijayawada, India. His current work focuses on one of science's most promising frontiers: developing miniature fiber-optic biosensors capable of detecting diseases quickly, accurately, and affordably. His team's WaveFlex Biosensors combine advances in photonics, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence to make sophisticated diagnostics more accessible to patients everywhere. He is particularly excited by the convergence of AI-enabled photonics, advanced optical biosensors, integrated and quantum photonics, and sustainable sensing technologies. He believes that these emerging areas have the potential to revolutionize healthcare, environmental monitoring, smart manufacturing, and next-generation communication systems.
Throughout his career, Santosh faced challenges familiar to many early-career scientists, such as limited funding and access to research facilities, outdated equipment, and the constant balancing of research, teaching, and personal responsibilities. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions, he developed a philosophy that continues to guide him: "Don't wait for perfect infrastructure—create excellent results with what you have." He also had the support of many wonderful mentors, including his PhD supervisor, Dr. S. K. Raghuwanshi; Dr. T. Srinivas; Prof. Kuldeep Raina; Prof. Rajan Jha; Prof. Bingyuan Zhang; and Er. Koneru Satyanarayana. He encourages young scientists to find mentors who inspire independent thinking, challenge their limits, and foster professional and personal growth.
During his PhD, Santosh had the privilege of meeting Ajoy Ghatak at a conference in 2012, where the two took a photo together. In that photograph, Ajoy placed his hand on Santosh’s shoulder. In Indian culture, this is a gesture of affection, encouragement, and blessing from a respected teacher or elder. This event became a lifelong source of inspiration. He shares, “I have kept that picture as my Google Scholar profile photo ever since, as a daily reminder to pursue excellence in research with humility and dedication. Sometimes, a single inspiring moment with a great scientist can shape one's entire journey.”
