Women in Industry Spotlight: Michelle L. Stock, PhD

Michelle Stock, PhD, is the Director of Business Development and Sales, North America at TracInnovations, a company focused on innovative solutions for image-based diagnosis and treatment.

Stock is an experienced business developer with 15+ years in high-tech industries. Stock has a PhD in Optics and is a co-founder of Arbor Photonics. The Optica team caught up with this innovative leader to ask a few questions.

What excites you the most about working in the optics and photonics industry?
Nearly everything! This is an amazing time to be part of the optics and photonics industry. We are impacting every aspect of life, taking the fruits of research and bringing them to commercial use in new ways every year. In just the span of my career, I've seen ultrafast (femtosecond) lasers that were in their infancy while I was publishing in grad school become globally-adopted tools for the most precise applications, especially ophthalmic surgery and the micromachining of devices we use every day. I'm particularly excited about how better health outcomes are enabled by taking advantage of the many ways light can be used to detect, image, diagnose, and ultimately provide therapy for so many diseases and conditions.

What career advice would you give your younger self?
To my college student self: be more adventurous and curious. When given the chance to study overseas, take it! Go to more seminars, and find out more about what your fellow grad students are working on. Second: to my early career self, learn about other functional areas within your company. As an engineer, I knew optics, but had little awareness of product development, production, quality, and regulatory areas. Spend time with the R&D engineers, the product managers, and people in business functions. Having more exposure to those areas helps you to see the value of each role, which will give you a broader perspective on what it takes to successfully commercialize products.

What is a hobby or passion of yours?
Volunteering for professional societies probably counts as a hobby for me. It all started when I was asked to join the Optica Corporate Associates Committee (as it was known then), and quickly, I was hooked! Being involved on various committees as well as starting a photonics industry cluster has allowed me to combine many things that I enjoy: being part of a mission to advance knowledge and people, getting to know and work with people across geography and at different points in their careers, and traveling to events and meetings (US, Europe and even New Zealand!). My life and work have been enriched by the many contacts and friends I've made through volunteering over the years.
