Optica Names Susana Marcos the 2025 Edgar D. Tillyer Award Recipient

Optica is pleased to announce that Susana Marcos, University of Rochester, New York, USA, has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Edgar D. Tiller Award. Marcos is honored for contributions to our basic understanding of the effect of the eye's optics on vision including the passage of light through the cornea and lens and into the photoreceptors where vision begins.

Marcos is the David R. Williams Director of the Center for Visual Science, Nicholas George Professor of Optics at The Institute of Optics and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Flaum Eye Institute, University of Rochester. She received an MsC and a PhD in Physics from the University of Salamanca and was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University. Before coming to Rochester, she was a Professor of Research and Director of the Institute of Optics, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), where she founded the Visual Optics and Biophotonics Lab.

Marcos is a pioneer in the development of new techniques for the evaluation of the eye, including retinal imaging instruments, aberrometers, adaptive optics, anterior segment imaging of the eye and intraocular lens designs. She has published more than 220 highly cited research articles, is the inventor of 26 patent families, is co-founder of the Plenoptika and 2EyesVision spin-offs, has directed 26 doctoral theses, and given more than 300 talks at international conferences.

She is an active volunteer serving on committees of the Sociedad Española de Óptica, the Association for Research in Vision Science and Ophthalmology, and Optica. For Optica, she has served on several award selection committees, the Publications Council and the Board of Directors. Her work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Edwin H. Land Medal, Adolph Lomb Medal, the European Young Investigator Award, the ICO Prize, Honoris Causa Doctorship, European Research Council Advanced Grant, Physics, Innovation and Technology Award, the Alcon Research Institute Award and, the Rey Jaime I Award. She is an Optica Fellow.

Established in 1953, the Tillyer Award is presented to an individual who has performed distinguished work in the field of vision, including but not limited to the optics, physiology, anatomy or psychology of the visual system. It honors Edgar D. Tillyer’s important contributions to the advancement of better vision and the optical sciences, and is endowed by the American Optical Company and the Chope Family Bypass Trust.
