Recognition for Review: Celebrate Peer Review Week 19th-25th September 2016

Peer ReviewPeer Review Week is a global event celebrating the importance of peer review in maintaining scientific quality. The event brings together individuals, institutions, & organizations committed to sharing the central message that good peer review, whatever shape or form it might take, is critical to scholarly communications.

This year’s theme, Recognition for Review, explores all aspects of how those participating in review activity should be recognized for their contribution. We are grateful to our volunteer reviewers for the time and energy they dedicate to improving the quality of our journals.

OSA is proud to be on the organizing committee for Peer Review Week 2016. We encourage you to join the #PeerRevWk16 and #RecognizeReview conversations on Twitter, or visit the Peer Review Week 2016 website for additional resources about peer review or to promote the week on a local level.

OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Arlene Smith

Smith“As a former Student Chapter Member and, more recently, a member of a Local Section, I have reaped the benefits of OSA’s Traveling Lecturer Program. I’ve had the opportunity to engage with several respected optics researchers and heard them speak on a range of topics. As a member of OSA’s Member and Education Services Council, I’m encouraged to see the Traveling Lecturer Directory grow, now with over 600 speakers. I am especially pleased to see early career researchers and industry professionals participating in the program.

In July 2016, I experienced the Program from the other side when I visited the Optics Students Karlsruhe (OSKar) Student Chapter at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany as a Traveling Lecturer. This was my first Student Chapter visit and I was excited to meet with Chapter Members, learn about their research and to explore an unfamiliar campus and city. My talk focused on how important it is to establish a professional network and to connect with the optics community early in your career. I was greeted so warmly by the student members who came along to my talk. Afterwards, I joined the students for a BBQ lunch - and some delicious local pilsners! The Traveling Lecturer Program provides an excellent opportunity to connect with students all over the world - an experience which I have found very rewarding. I am looking forward to many more Chapter visits and to making new OSA friends along the way.”

Industry

The 100-Year View of Photonics, Part 1—The Century of Most Rapid Growth

OSA's Centennial offers OIDA an opportunity to take a long view of our market and its impact on society. Optics and photonics has grown from a small passive optics industry over a century ago, when agriculture was still the largest economic sector, to production worth over $400 billion per year today. And it's still growing, albeit more slowly.

Defense Research Announcement

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced that a solicitation will soon be issued for the Extreme Optics and Imaging (EXTREME) program. The initiative is based on the potential to develop optical properties from metallic and dielectric "metamaterials", scattering surfaces and volumes, holographic structures, and diffractive elements. These would break the standard "laws" of reflection and refraction for optics. DARPA anticipates to fund three technical challenge areas that will stimulate disciplinary convergence. Two teams will be based on materials engineering concepts, and one on modeling and design. DARPA will host a proposers day 1 September.
