I wish to acknowledge and honour my PhD advisor, mentor, and friend, the late Yoh-Han Pao, formerly George Dively Professor of Electrical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, a man who combined rare intelligence with kind humanity. I am hugely indebted to Yoh-Han for his boundless enthusiasm, expert guidance and warm friendship, plus the excellent learning opportunities he facilitated during my time in his group at Case. His influence provided career-long inspiration.
