Richard S. Hunter

Richard S Hunter joined the National Bureau of Standards in 1927 in the colorimetry lab. In 1952, he founded the Hunter Associates Laboratory in Farifax, Virginia. Over the years, the lab had high-profile customers, including Procter and Gamble. He is best known as the developer of the method of photoelectric tristimulus colorimetry, the designer of the Multipurpose Reflectometer and Color Difference Meter which use this method of colorimetry, the originator of the concepts of different aspects of gloss, and the developer of other instruments and procedures to measure reflectance, color and gloss.

He was a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists; a member of the Inter-Society Color Council, American Society for Testing Materials; Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry; Washington Academy of Science; A.A.A.S, and the Institute of Food Technologists. In 1961 he received the ASTM Award of Merit for significant contributions to the evaluation of the optical and appearance properties of materials. In 1962 he received the Armin J. Pruning award for pioneer work in the field of color and appearance measurement of paints. He served as president of tte National Capitol Section of the Optical Society of America for 1967-68. In 1970, he received the David Richardson Medal.

He passed away in 1991.
