In this webinar hosted by the Short Wavelength Sources and Attosecond/High Field Physics Technical Group, Jian Wu of East China Normal University will focus on the precision measurement and control of the ultrafast dynamics of the molecules in strong laser fields.

The microstructure determines the macroscopic properties of matter, which is also the basis for us to understand the nature. From the invention of the optical microscope to the development of X-ray diffraction technology, the ability for one to explore nature has been greatly improved, but mainly focused on the acquisition of steady-state information although the microcosm is a dynamic evolution process.

For example, the motion of an atomic nucleus within a molecule is usually on the time scale of picoseconds or femtoseconds corresponding to changes in molecular structure and interactions. The underlying reason behind this is the ultrafast movement of electrons on the attosecond (10-18 seconds) time scale. Therefore, the understanding of the ultrafast dynamics of the microcosm will not only reveal novel physical phenomena and mechanisms, but also will provide new ideas for novel material and structural design.

Subject Matter Level: Intermediate - Assumes basic knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:

  • About waveform controlled ultrashort laser pulse – a powerful tool to manipulate and probe the ultrafast dynamics of molecules
  • About multi-particle coincidence measurement and directly visualizing the micro-reaction dynamics of molecules

Who Should Attend:

  • Young and established researchers in the general field of ultrafast photonics
  • Graduate students, especially those that are seeking opportunities for their next career step

About the Presenter: Jian Wu, East China Normal University

Jian Wu is the Director and Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy, East China Normal University. His research focuses on the measurement and control of the ultrafast dynamics of molecules in strong laser fields, including the correlated electron-nuclear dynamics in molecular multiphoton energy absorption, the attosecond intramolecular dynamics of electrons such as the electron localization and tunneling, rescattering and recapture, and the molecular vibrational and rotational wave packets such as the molecular echo, all-optical three-dimensional molecular orientation, and molecular ultrafast buffering.
