Allebach is a Fellow of IEEE, the National Academy of Inventors, the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), and SPIE. He was named Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year by IS&T and SPIE, and was named Honorary Member of IS&T, its highest award. He has received the IEEE Daniel E. Noble Award, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. In 2016, he received OSA’s Edwin H. Land Medal.

Allebach’s research has broadly focused on electronic imaging systems with a special emphasis on the imaging pipeline for printers. He pioneered the development of the direct binary search (DBS) algorithm first conceived as a method for synthesis of digital diffractive elements, and later extended to digital halftoning. The results of his research can be found in products that have sold 100s of millions of units worldwide. His work is guided by a human vision model-based perspective.
