David S. Grey was a member of the first class of Fellows in 1959. Throughout his career, he published many articles, worked at Polaroid, and was the owner of David Grey Associates, Inc, which specialized in lens design. He received the 1948 Adolph Lomb Medal, and the 1986 Joseph Fraunhofer Award “for contributions to the development of computer optimizations techniques in lens design.” He earned his BA in mathematics from Harvard College in 1940, where he also pursued graduate studies. Grey was among the first to develop a large-scale lens optimization program for engineers and to use the orthonormalization of aberrations in lens design.
