Yuri N Denisyuk earned his undergraduate degree from the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics in 1954. Upon graduating, he began work at the Vavilov State Optical Institute. In 1988 he joined the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences as Chief of the Laboratory of Optoelectronics and Holography. He also taugh holography at the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics. His main research was in holography, and he is responsible for developing holography in three-dimensional media. For this work, he received many awards, including the 1970 Lenin Prize, the 1983 Dennis Gabor Award, and the 1992 R.W. Wood Prize.

Denisyuk passed away in 2006.
