Walter S. Stiles

OSA Fellow Walter S Stiles received his univeristy training in mathematics and physics. He was an Andrews Scholar at University College, London, graudating in physics in 1920. He received his PhD from London Univeristy in 1929 and his DSc in 1930. Stiles entered the British Government Scientific Service in 1929 and was appointed Junior Scientific Officer at the National Physical Laboratories in 1925. He remained with the Laboratory throughout his scientific career, retiring from active government service in 1961 with the rank of Deputy Chief Scientific Officer. 

He was elected to the Royal Society in 1955. In 1965, he received OSA’s Edgar D. Tillyer Award. Other awards include the Newton medal of the Color Group of Great Britain, the Gold Medal of the Illuminating Engineering Society, and the Prix Niels Finsen.

He passed away in 1985.
