Lihong Wang is Bren Professor of Medical and Electrical Engineering at Caltech. He has published 470 journal articles and has delivered over 400 talks. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous awards including the Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award, the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, the C.E.K. Mees Medal, the Michael S. Feld Award, the IEEE Technical Achievement and Biomedical Engineering Awards, and the SPIE Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award. He has also received an honorary doctorate from Lund University in Sweden and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He was elected a Fellow of the Soceity in 2004.

Wang’s research includes publishing the first functional photoacoustic CT and 3D photoacoustic microscopy. He is also involved with the development of deep photoacoustic imaging of biological tissues, breaking the long-standing optical diffusion limit and providing the only modality capable of multiscale high-resolution functional and molecular imaging of organelles, cells, tissues, and organs as well as small-animal organisms in vivo. He is part of the development of time-reversed ultrasonically encoded optical focusing in scattering tissue and developed the world’s fastest camera called compressed ultrafast photography.
