Deep Jariwala received his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, India, in 2010 and his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University, USA, in 2015. He then worked at Caltech Applied Physics and Materials Science as a Resnick Prize Postdoctoral Fellow from 2015-2018. Today, he is Assistant Professor Peter & Susanne Armstrong Distinguished Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. Jariwala’s research spans novel optical materials and optoelectronic devices. In particular, he focuses on excitonic and low-dimensional semiconductors.

Jariwala's research has earned him awards from multiple professional societies, including the Peter Mark Memorial Award of the American Vacuum Society, IEEE Photonics Society Young Investigator Award, IEEE Nanotechnology Council Early Career Award, IUPAP Early Career Scientist Prize in Semiconductors as well as the Bell Labs Prize. In 2024, he received Optica’s Adolph Lomb Medal, “For seminal contributions to nano-optics of low-dimensional semiconductors and development of excitonic meta-materials.”
