About the Speaker
Knight is Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College where until 2010 he was Deputy Rector (Research). He was knighted in 2005 for his work in optical physics. Knight was the 2004 President of the Optical Society of America and 2011-2013 President of the Institute of Physics. He is Editor of Contemporary Physics, Chair of the UK National Quantum Technology Programme Strategy Advisory Board, chairs the Quantum Metrology Institute at the National Physical Laboratory, was until 2010 chair of the UK Defence Scientific Advisory Council and remains a UK Government science advisor. His research centres on quantum optics and quantum technology. He has won the Thomas Young Medal and the Glazebrook Medal of the Institute of Physics, the Ives Medal and the Walther Medal and Prize of the OSA, the Royal Medal of the Royal Society and the Faraday Prize of the IET.

Graham Reed

Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK


About the Speaker
Graham Reed, FREng, FIET, FSPIE, FOSA, FEOS, CEng, is Professor of Silicon Photonics and has recently been appointed as the Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, UK. He is recognised as one of the founders of the field of Silicon Photonics, having established his Silicon Photonics Research Group in 1989. The Group is now approximately 50 people strong, has provided a series of world-leading results since its inception, and currently holds two world records for data rates for silicon modulators/transmitters. The group has also been at the forefront of emerging applications of Silicon Photonics such as LiDAR, mid-IR Silicon Photonics, programmable photonics, and silicon photonics for space to name but a few. Reed is a regular invited and contributing author to the major Silicon Photonics conferences around the world. He has served on numerous international conference committees and has also chaired many others. He has authored more than 670 publications in the field of Silicon Photonics, including 185 invited/keynote/plenary talks. In 2013 he was the recipient of the IET Crompton Medal for Achievement in Energy, and in 2014 he was awarded a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award. In 2017 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, in 2019 he was awarded an industry prize (PIC award) for his contribution to the Silicon Photonics field, and in 2020 he was elected as a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the European Optical Society (EOS). In 2023 he was awarded the “Sir Frank Whittle Medal” by the Royal Academy of Engineering as well as the SPIE Gold Medal.

Ian Walmsley

About the Speaker
Professor Ian Walmsley FRS became the second Provost of Imperial College London in September 2018. He is also Chair in Experimental Physics at the College. He leads the academic mission of the College, overseeing its research, education and innovation and translation activities. His role includes both strategy and planning, ensuring that resources are aligned with the strategic aims of the College’s plan. Professor Walmsley graduated from Imperial with first-class honours in physics in 1980 and completed his PhD at the University of Rochester before working as a postdoc at Cornell University. He became Assistant Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester in 1988 and held a number of roles there before joining the University of Oxford in 2001 as Professor of Experimental Physics, and Hooke Professor in 2005. He was also a Senior Visiting Fellow at Princeton University. He was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of the University of Oxford in 2009, becoming Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) in 2015. At Oxford, he led the Networked Quantum Information Technologies Hub and headed up the creation of the Rosalind Franklin Institute. He was a member of the EPSRC Council, Chaired the Beirat of the Max Born Institute in Berlin, was on the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics’ Science Advisory Board, and was the international advisor for the Japanese Institute for Molecular Science. He remains an active researcher in quantum information processing using light, including quantum computing and simulation, sensing and networking, and he leads a research group at Imperial in this area. He is also one of the co-founders of ORCA Computing, a quantum computing start-up company. In recognition of his contributions to quantum optics and ultrafast optics, Professor Walmsley was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2012. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America (now Optica), of which he was President in 2018.

Carol Monaghan

About the Speaker
Carol was born and brought up in Glasgow North West, graduating from Strathclyde University with a BSc (Hons) in Laser Physics and Optoelectronics in 1993. She trained as a teacher, gaining a PGCE in Physics and Mathematics. Carol has worked in many Glasgow comprehensive schools, including 14 years at Hyndland Secondary as Head of Physics and Head of Science. She spent two years as a Glasgow University lecturer training future teachers. An SQA consultant, Carol has been involved in developing physics qualifications at a national level. A mother of two school-age children and a third at university, Carol is proud to be part of the changing face of politics and understands that people need elected representatives who appreciate the challenges of daily life. First elected in the 2015 General Election, and re-elected in the 2017 General Election with the highest majority in Glasgow, Carol is the only Scottish MP on the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, is Chair of the APPG on Photonics and Vice-Chair of the APPG on Surgical Mesh Implants. As the SNP’s Westminster Spokesperson for Education, Armed Forces and Veterans, Carol has been resolute in challenging the UK government to lift the public sector pay freeze, which has seen Armed Forces personnel take a real terms wage cut, and calling for an armed forces representative body on a statutory footing to properly support service personnel and veterans. Carol has also led the campaign in the UK Parliament to change attitudes towards Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), leading two landmark debates on the research and treatment on the condition and on the controversial PACE trial. Carol continues to press for a full debate in the House of Commons.
