Optical Imaging’s Many Pathways
This month, the all-virtual Imaging and Applied Optics Congress will feature cutting-edge research and applications in image acquisition and display, computational imaging holography, and more. Indeed, the field has evolved into a vast commercial domain in the consumer, defense/security, medical, and many other sectors.

In the July/August edition of Optics & Photonics News, OSA Senior Industry Adviser Tom Hausken looks at these major markets, their growth, and prospects. And there’s much more innovation ahead. For example, the cover story of the same issue details new designs that replace traditional bulk lenses with thin masks or diffusers, opening new possibilities for compact 3D microscopes. Another article explores how technological advances have helped make optics a key component in emerging biometrics and face-recognition systems.
