OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan received a delegation from the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) led by its president, Prof. Eva Zažímalová, a biochemist, to discuss collaborative opportunities on outreach to the Czech academic and industrial optics and photonics communities. Prof. Zažímalová and Ms. Rogan discussed OSA student chapters and sections, meetings and conferences (most notably, High Brightness Congress in Prague), OSA’s international work in environmental sensing, and other topics. CAS was founded in 1784 and operates 54 research institutes with 9,000 employees and 2,000 PhDs across the country.

Did you know only 16% of the nearly 150,000 English Wikipedia articles for people tagged as scientists are about women? To address this imbalance, OSA hosted the Wiki Needs Women of Optics Edit-A-Thon this past September. The program trained participants on how to become a Wikipedia Editor and provided the opportunity to edit existing, as well as create new pages for women. Not only did participants create brand new pages for Susana Marcos Celestino, Anna Consortini, Nimmi Ramanujam and Jannick Rolland but they also made edits to 47 existing articles, including adding 65 new references! To date, there have already been more than 50,000 views of these pages… and this is just the beginning. Click the button below to learn how to get involved.

OSA hosted its inaugural 5G Summit on 16-17 October 2019 at OSA headquarters in Washington, DC, USA. The Summit provided a platform for leaders from industry, academia and government to collaborate and discuss critical 5G technologies. With the creation of a new millimeter-wavelength infrastructure, 5G technology could enable considerably faster cellular network speeds. Expert speakers from Sprint, the Georgia Institute of Technology, China Telecom, Nokia, Futurewei, II-VI, Lumentum and ADVA Optical discussed the full spectrum of technologies needed to successfully implement 5G, including fiber and wireless integration, high-bandwidth radio and optical technologies and the applications of 5G to virtualization, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) student chapter in India is a vibrant and dynamic group of students actively participating in various chapter activities ranging from outreach to professional development. Through my visit to them, I found that the OSA Traveling Lecturer program enables networking opportunities, which not only help chapter members to establish collaborations and advance their career prospects, but also the traveling lecturer to initiate joint projects identifying students with suitable skills for their future research activities. As a traveling lecturer, it gives me immense pleasure to share my knowledge and experience that could help the next generation of photonic scientists and technocrats. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.

Combine your interest in policy with your science background. Apply for the 2020-2021 OSA Congressional Fellowships. Congressional Fellows spend one year working on Capitol Hill as legislative assistants on the staff of a member of the U.S. Congress or a Congressional Committee. Applicants must have a PhD by the start of the fellowship, 1 September 2020. Mid- and late-career applicants are also encouraged to apply. In addition to being a great opportunity for young professionals, this is also an ideal way to spend an academic sabbatical or leave of absence from a company. Deadline to apply is 3 January 2020.

The Women in Optical Communications Scholarship is a merit-based prize recognizing outstanding women studying optical communications and networking. Three $3,000 USD scholarships will be distributed annually to supplement tuition, mandatory fees, and other expenses. Additionally, winners will receive up to $2,000 USD in travel expenses, housing and registration fees to attend the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC). Recipients will be recognized at OFC.

There are also need-based travel grants are available for women who are currently graduate students, working as post-docs, or in the first 1-5 years of their career. These grants are intended to help cover travel costs to the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC).

Established in 2012, this prize honors Ivan Kaminow for his many contributions to the field of optics and photonics, as well as his dedication to mentoring and inspiring early career researchers. The recipient will receive funding to attend The OSA Leadership Meeting and an OSA-managed meeting of their choice. This fund is sponsored by the Kaminow family, Intel Corporation and personal donations from the OSA community.

The University of Warsaw is hosting the 2020 Siegman International School on Lasers 18-25 July. Deadline to apply: 1 March 2020.

It's long been our view that industry standards are a mixed bag: they can be good for expanding markets, but often at the expense of suppliers. Standardizing the product allows customers to play multiple suppliers against each other. This drives down prices, and suppliers' profits.

An industry veteran said at the MIT-AIM IPSR-I Fall 2019 meeting in Boston, MA, USA last month that there are good standards and not-so-good standards. The good ones are those like the IEEE 802.3 networking protocol, commonly known as Ethernet. It enables interconnectivity of diverse pieces of equipment, expanding the market from what it might be without a universally adopted standard. This is particularly apt for networking, and the associated network effect is even quantified in Metcalfe's Law: the value of a network such as the Ethernet increases by the square of the number of connected users. The standard creates an entire ecosystem of compatible products.
