Nobel Laureate and 2013 OSA President Donna Strickland, a professor at the University of Waterloo, was featured as the "Light the Future" plenary speaker on 1 April 2019 at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. for the OSA Leadership Conference. Donna discussed the fundamental science behind her co-invention of chirped pulse amplification (CPA) - the pivotal research that earned her recognition as one of three Nobel Prize in Physics winners in 2018. Donna also used the platform to champion for increased advocacy in support of basic research and describe her involvement with the International Photonics Advocacy Coalition (IPAC), an initiative of OSA that serves to unite the global optics and photonics community around public policy issues. During a brief Q&A moderated by 2019 OSA President Ursula Gibson, Donna shared anecdotes into what it was like to receive the Nobel Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and highlighted many of the activities in the days surrounding the Nobel ceremony.

Over 100 participants gathered in Washington, D.C. for the Brightest Light Initiative Workshop on 27-29 March. The event, facilitated by the National Photonics Initiative, was sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration. The workshop brought leading experts together to articulate a community response to the 2017 U.S. National Academy of Sciences report Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers: Reaching for the Brightest Light through discussions surrounding the current state of and potential for the science and technology of high-brightness lasers. The workshop was chaired by Roger Falcone of University of California at Berkeley, who is the 2019 American Physical Society President. The workshop's organizing group expects to complete its report on the workshop's outcomes in June. The National Photonics Initiative is a collaborative alliance among industry, academia and government co-founded and co-sponsored by OSA and SPIE, with *partners* the American Physical Society, the IEEE Photonics Society, and the Laser Institute of America.

While visiting the Manipal and MNIT Student Chapters I was able to attend two events, a seminar series where I gave a research and professional development talk at Manipal University, as well as an invited research talk at the conference on Optical and Wireless Communications hosted at MNIT where 100 people attended. Both events were attended by enthusiastic student chapter members interested in learning more about my experience as an OSA Member and researcher. The students showed immense interest in their careers and opportunities available to them. I received positive feedback from students who mentioned via email: "Your first talk on how to network professionally was very informational and helped me a lot on learning how to network effectively." The OSA Students chapters treated me with the utmost respect and were extremely eager to learn from my experiences and valued my visit. Overall this was an amazing experience.
