OSA Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Arti Agrawal

AgrawalArti Agrawal, OSA Traveling Lecturer, Ambassador and Senior Member, City University London, London, UK

“I had the opportunity to travel to India as a guest lecturer in April.  I had an amazing experience visiting various cities and chapters (holding joint events).

I travelled from north India (New Delhi, the capital city) to the eastern cost (Hyderabad) and then to Kolkatta before retracing my steps. The heat, the long flights and hectic schedules were almost forgotten when interacting with the chapters, being overwhelmed by their generous hospitality and impressed by their work.  The passion and enthusiasm that I saw in the students was so infectious and energizing that I was so grateful to interact with these wonderful students.

To say I was overwhelmed by the brilliance of the students, their ideas, their questions and their interest, would be an understatement. If someone could bottle the energy in the room, they could power a city for a week!

To each of the chapters, the members, the organizers and faculty advisors I cannot say “thank you” enough times. I loved this experience and I only wish I could have spent more time at each place.

When I set out from London, I wondered how the trip would pan out. Now that I am back I know this: I want to go again!”

More on What the Brexit Means to Photonics

LincolnLast month’s OIDA newsletter listed several things to look out for if the Brexit vote actually leads to an actual exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union (see OIDA’s comments also here). We listed several effects, some near-term and some further out:

  • Changes in currency exchange rates
  • Uncertainty leading to slower investment and demand for capital equipment
  • Possible tighter financing for small companies
  • Decoupled R&D projects and an unclear “exit dividend” for R&D funding
  • Company relocation to the main land
  • Issues around recruitment of photonics talent in the face of visa reform

Business will mostly go on as usual, apart from the immediate effect of exchange rates. The long-term effects that are least clear and the most consequential. But years will pass first, if the exit even happens at all. Other commentators have similar observations, including these thoughts from John Lincoln of the U.K. Photonics Leadership Group, in an interview with OPN.

New Optica Article Type for Breakthrough Results: Memorandum

Optica now offers a vehicle for the announcement of important new results that should be disseminated to the community quickly.  Memoranda are a nod to the past when authors wrote letters to the editor—which have all but disappeared and been replaced by the currently familiar four- or five-page short paper format.  Submission requirements include a strict two page limit and a 35-word abstract that must make the impact of the result clear to a broad audience. The Journal’s existing rapid editorial review process will enable publication within 4-6 weeks.  As OSA’s Open Access journal for high-impact research, Optica’s wide availability and prestige mean it is perfectly placed to offer this article type to today’s optics and photonics community.

See the first example now published: 8 × 8 × 40 Gbps fully integrated silicon photonic network on chip, Chong Zhang, Shangjian Zhang, Jon D. Peters, and John E. Bowers, Optica 3, Issue 7, pp. 785-786 (2016)

For more details, read the editorial.
