The National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli OSA Student Chapter conducted an outreach program in their local schools using their Youth Education Outreach Grant. What will your chapter apply to use funding for in 2015? OSA provides grant funding for OSA Student Chapters and Local Sections in two categories: 1) Youth Education and 2) Activity/Professional Development & Special Events. All OSA Chapters and Sections are encouraged to apply annually. Activity and Education Outreach Grant applications for events and activities planned to take place 1 July – 31 December 2015 are due 30 April 2015!

IONS conferences are student events organized and hosted by the most active OSA Student Chapters around the world. They bring together local, regional and international attendees for three or four day programs featuring student presentations, poster sessions, keynote lectures, chapter management activities and social events. Seven conferences will be held in 2015, and registration is currently open for IONS Karlsruhe 2015 and IONS Nanjing 2015.

The 2015 OFC Conference and Exposition concluded on 26 March at the Los Angeles Convention Center with 560 exhibitors, more than 1,100 presentations and 12,375 attendees from around the world. Conference and exhibition programming provided attendees with valuable insights into the latest optical communications research (near- and long-term) and technology from more than a dozen topical areas (i.e., bandwidth demand, 100G/400G network design and optimization, 1 terabit (Tb) and beyond optical networking, and wavelength agile access networks).

Exhibiting companies at OFC made news with more than 100 news announcements highlighting technical advancements in 100G coherent modules, optical transceivers for data centers, and software-based solutions. This year’s conference offered the insider’s perspective on society’s continued progression to constant connectedness and the Internet of Things, such as smart appliances and mobile apps. The diversity of the technical sessions indicated the convergence of the traditional telecom service providers and the data center. Exhibiting companies also provided technology insights through their participation in show floor programming with topics such as software defined networking, integrated photonics and intra-data center interconnects that encompass the complete landscape of optical convergence and network evolution.

On 26 March, approximately 100 local high school students and 20 Girl Scouts were welcomed to the Los Angeles Convention Center at OFC to participate in “Light the Future: A Community Outreach Event”.
Students received hands-on, light-focused demonstrations from OSA student chapters, which included a Spectrobox from the University of California, Irvine and Optical Illusions, Mirrors and Reflections and Music Transmission from the University of Southampton, UK. They were also given a tour of the exhibition hall and learned about the technology, science and business of fiber optics from companies such as Infinera, Synopsys and Corning. Participants received an International Year of Light “LIGHT BLOX” kit to further their curiosity and knowledge about the world of optics.

Applied Optics Engineering and Laboratory Notes Now Online
Applied Optics (AO) is accepting submissions for a new type of article called Engineering and Laboratory Notes (E&L Notes), which gives engineers and technicians a venue to highlight laboratory techniques and hands-on skills required for the design, analysis, fabrication, integration, alignment, and measurement of optical components and systems.
