In this webinar hosted by the OSA Fiber Modeling and Fabrication Technical Group, Dr. Lei Wei from Nanyang Technological University will introduce the design and fabrication of advanced functional fibers, including both material selections and fabrication challenges. Advanced functional fibers are fabricated from materials with disparate optical, electronic, and mechanical properties using scalable preform-to-fiber processing. This research field is at the crossroads of many disciplines, including optics, materials science, nanotechnology, and fluid dynamics.

During the webinar, Dr. Wei will present three different stories reflecting the sophisticated functionalities that have been achieved at fiber lengths and uniformity. The first story is the demonstration of a zero-angular-momentum microfluidic laser with purely radial emission. This new capability, implemented monolithically within a single fiber, presents opportunities ranging from flexible multidirectional displays to minimally invasive directed light delivery systems for medical applications. The second story is the demonstration of a silicon nanosphere fabrication process by continuously feeding a silica-cladded silicon-core fiber into a flame to harnesses the Plateau-Rayleigh capillary instability. The third story is the demonstration of intrinsically produced, electrically connected, optoelectronic devices in a silica fiber with the integration of crystalline semiconducting material and metal electrodes in a precisely defined metal-semiconductor-metal architecture. At the conclusion of the webinar, other fabrication approaches and applications will be discussed.

Presenter

Dr. Lei Wei, Nanyang Technological University

Dr. Lei Wei received the B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Wuhan University of Technology, China, in 2005; and the Ph.D. degree in Photonics Engineering from Technical University of Denmark, Denmark, in 2010. Then he joined the Research Laboratory of Electronics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral associate. In September 2014, he joined the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore as a Nanyang Assistant Professor. His main research interests are fiber-based optoelectronic devices, novel multifunctional fiber structures, bio-fiber interfaces, and in-fiber energy generation and storage.
