How to Manage Your Emotions and Build Resilience

Last year brought many challenging situations. How we handle our emotions when reacting to these situations is not easy, especially when it feels like the bad news is compounding: an experiment doesn’t work, your supervisor is setting unrealistic expectations, your paper was rejected ...oh and there’s a pandemic too. We will look at the science of our emotions and how we can better manage our emotions to become more resilient. When we cannot control what’s happening around us, we will find the power to control the way we respond to it.
Cathy Sorbara is a neuroscientist and passionate about raising the voices of women. For 10 years she worked as a researcher in academia in Canada and Germany, studying neurodegenerative diseases. But when she moved to England, Cathy decided to explore a different path. She became Chief Operations Officer of a start-up company called Cheeky Scientist, a global professional network that helps PhDs see their value and find meaningful work outside of academia. Now she lives and works in the Netherlands where she continues to support academics by advocating for their mental health and wellbeing through her own company, Sorbara Consulting.
Jennifer Felsted-Knight is a neuroscientist and professional coach. For 10 years her academic research focused on understanding the neurophysiology of feeding and body weight regulation. She then transitioned to digital health innovation where she led a data science team in evaluating the quality and safety of artificial intelligence-based solutions in healthcare. After working in research for 17 years, Jennifer founded her own company, Redwood Creek Coaching, where she now helps women scientists who feel stuck rediscover joy in their careers. She is passionate about changing the way scientists experience work and integrates her deep knowledge of neuroscience, psychology, and health to hel p her clients shape the habits and mindsets that lead to the success they crave.
