Hollow-core microstructured fibers (HCF) has now become a versatile tool for applications ranging from low latency optical communication, ultra-intense pulse delivery, few-cycle pulse compression, UV and mid-IR light generation to biochemical sensing, quantum optics and mid-IR to Terahertz waveguides. These applications call for better performance HCF in terms of loss, bandwidth, mode quality, damage threshold, etc.

In this webinar hosted by the OSA Fiber Modeling and Fabrication Technical Group, Professor Yingying Wang of Beijing University of Technology will talk about the historical development, the recent advances and the future possibilities of HCF. She will show the improvement of HCF optical properties in the last 20 years and application requirements. In particular the emphasis on the reduction of transmission loss in HCF, which is one of the main target for optical fiber development, will be discussed.

What You Will Learn:

  • How is light guided in a hollow-core
  • How to make a hollow-core microstructured fiber
  • Why is hollow-core fiber useful?
  • Where can you use hollow-core fiber?
  • What is the future of hollow-core fiber development?

Who Should Attend:

  • PhD students
  • Research Scientists

About the presenter(s):

Yingying Wang, Beijing University of Technology

Yingying Wang obtained her Ph.D. degree from University of Bath, UK in 2011. The Department of Physics, University of Bath, awarded the “Albert Freedman Prize” to Wang’s Ph.D. thesis. She is currently an associate professor at Institute of Laser Engineering, Beijing University of Technology, in which her research interest lies on novel optical fiber design and fabrication. Wang’s contributions on hollow-core hypocycloid-core Kagome fiber and hollow-core conjoined-tube negative curvature fiber are well recognized by the microstructured fiber community. She has delivered many post deadline and invited talks in international conferences such as, CLEO, ECOC, Photonics West, CLEO-PR, Advanced Photonics Congress and Workshop on Specialty Optical Fiber. She has authored more than 30 technical papers with >500 total citations.
