Digital manufacturing, or 3D printing, is revolutionizing manufacturing. It offers the ability to place precise amounts of different materials throughout all three dimensions, enabling us to produce previously unimaginable structures in a single seamless process step. All of this promises a very 3D future for electromagnetics and photonics, which remain primarily planar technologies. This webinar, hosted by the OSA Photonic Metamaterials Technical Group, will discuss the pioneering steps of the EM Lab to explore new concepts in metamaterials and photonic crystals that fully exploit the third dimension.

Dr. Raymond Rumpf, founder of the EM Lab, will be discussing their algorithm to generate spatially-variant lattices. This algorithm can bend, twist, and otherwise spatially vary a periodic structure without deforming the unit cells. This gives designers of metamaterials and photonic crystals new and profound degrees of freedom. The algorithm can be used to put planar periodic structures onto curved surfaces while maintaining the size, shape, and spacing of the elements in the array. Using this algorithm, the EM Lab discovered several new mechanisms for controlling light and electromagnetic fields. Spatially-variant anisotropic metamaterials were discovered to be able to sculpt the near-field around components and are currently being studied to reduce the coupling and interference experienced between components placed in close proximity. The EM Lab has developed a new class of spatially-variant photonic crystals that provide new ways to control light and circumvent the limitations imposed by refraction, which will also be discussed during the webinar.

About the Presenter: Raymond C. Rumpf, University of Texas at El Paso

Dr. Raymond C. Rumpf is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and has a joint appointment in the Computational Science program. In 2010, Raymond founded the EM Lab at UTEP with a mission to develop revolutionary technologies enabled by digital manufacturing. Prior to joining UTEP, Raymond was the CTO for Prime Photonics where he helped transform the company’s technology portfolio from exclusively fiber optic sensors to an array of technologies for extreme applications. Raymond earned his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology. He earned his PhD in Optics from UCF. Raymond has been awarded numerous awards including the highly prestigious University of Texas Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award. He is an Associate Editor for SPIE Optical Engineering, Program Chair for Advanced Fabrication Technologies at Photonics West, and a Senior Member of SPIE. He is also a member of IEEE, OSA, and ARRL.
