Commercializing active optics: My road from PhD student to entrepreneur
02 March 2021
Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC - 05:00)
Dr. Lukes will share insights gained while transitioning from a PhD student to an entrepreneur. She started Agile Focus Designs in 2015 to provide accurate, agile, and user-friendly tools for microscopists in manufacturing, science, and healthcare. Since then Agile Focus has sought the development of a fast focus and zoom system to mitigate the need for switching or translating objective lenses to achieve magnification change during microscopy. Inspired by experiments in a cramped office space, Agile Focus has also created additional optomechanical components to reduce cost and improve space efficiency for entrepreneurs and those working remotely. This webinar will cover advancements made in active optics toward fast focus and zoom, and the lessons learned along the way.
About Our Speaker: Sarah Lukes, Agile Focus Designs
Dr. Sarah Lukes currently serves as a 2020 OSA ambassador. She received an electrical engineering PhD from Montana State University in 2015 as an NSF Graduate Research fellow. Her diverse background includes working in orthopedics/radiology, cardiovascular stents, and cryogenics at the Mayo Clinic, Boston Scientific, and S2 Corporation, respectively. During her doctorate, she gained expertise in optical MEMS while publishing 14 papers. In 2015, Dr. Lukes started Agile Focus Designs to forge connections across disciplines for the advancement of miniature imaging, science, and healthcare.
